Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury MP, Honorary President of IPU
With an established business background, Mr. Chowdhury has an impressive track record in public service spanning 25 years and has excelled in various roles and responsibilities.
A graduate of School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, he holds a Joint Honors degree in Economics and Politics and a Diploma in Law from University of Westminster, United Kingdom having completed Academic stage for entry to Bar.
As the 28th President of Inter-Parliamentary Union the global organization of National Parliaments, he is the first and only Bangladeshi to date, to have been elected to this highest office of global parliamentary leadership.
For his exceptional and outstanding leadership in promoting inter-parliamentary relations, Mr. Chowdhury has been conferred with highest State Awards – Order of Friendship - from the Russian Federation in 2017 and from Vietnam in 2018 – the first President of the IPU in its 128-year history to be so decorated.
As President of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) from 1996 – 2001, he successfully piloted Bangladesh’s elevation to ‘Test Status’, and Full Membership of International Cricket Council (ICC). BCB was decorated with Bangladesh’s highest national award (Independence Day Award) under his leadership and for contributions to development of the game, he is the only Bangladeshi till date to be made an Honorary Life Member of Marylebone Cricket Club, Lords, London.
He has been a Member of High-Level Steering Group - Every Woman Every Child - a global movement to champion the health of women, children and adolescents led by UN SG and. is currently a Member of Global Business Leaders Caucus, an initiative of OECD’s Global Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation (GPEDC) to realize Agenda 2030.
Presently serving his 4th term in Bangladesh Parliament, Mr. Chowdhury Chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Ministry of Planning
Mr. Hamdan Hossain Chowdhury
Having grown up and gone to school in Bangladesh, Mr. Chowdhury completed his higher education in 2012, graduating with honors in Political Science & Sociology from University of Toronto, Canada.
After graduating, Mr. Chowdhury qualified and was recognized by Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association (CIFFA) as a Freight Forwarder (in April 2014) with specialization in Supply Chain Management and International Trade & Transportation.
His expertise and knowledge in the Logistics sector and innovating with creative end to end solutions for the trade, has blended well with Karnaphuli’s established and extensive footprint in the Bangladesh shipping scene. This has in turn led to Karnaphuli expanding into the air cargo airline business as well being the only owner of a containerized fleet of Bangladesh Flag Vessels
Other than developing synergies and enhanced coordination amongst the various verticals within Karnaphuli, Mr. Chowdhury is also responsible for identifying new business opportunities and segments for the Group to venture into.
He is an active member of Bangladesh Ocean Going Ship Owners Association (BOGSOA), promoting and safeguarding the interests of Bangladesh’s Shipping Community, and at the same time realizing the potential of Bangladesh as a maritime nation.
Mr. Chowdhury is very passionate about the marine world and environmental issues. He volunteers as a research and policy resource for Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forrest, and Climate Change.
Ms. Raimah Chowdhury
After completing the renowned International Baccalaureate curriculum and graduating with Honors in May 2010, Ms. Chowdhury pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. She completed a double major in Political Science and Religion and graduated with Honors in 2014.
After successfully pursuing a Certification of Business Management from the University of Toronto, Continuing Studies, she joined the family-owned business, Karnaphuli Group in 2015.
Currently, Ms. Chowdhury is responsible for strategic growth and development of the Group's activities in new areas (such as Retail in partnership with brands such as Skechers, US Polo, W etc.) as well as stream-lining of existing areas of operation in context of implementation and oversight of annual operating plans.
Ms. Chowdhury launched the Bangladesh China Foundation for Future, the first of its kind, in August 2016. The Foundation is a youth-based platform for students, young adults and working professionals promoting connectivity and exchange between the two nations. This initiative is recognized and assisted by the Embassy of People's Republic of China in Bangladesh.
Ms. Chowdhury is the Founder President of Bangladesh Chapter of Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA). Formed in 1974, WISTA is a global organisation connecting female executives and decision-makers around the world and serves as a connector for its network of more than 3,800 female professionals from all sectors of the maritime industry.
